El Tunco
2019-08-01: This was an unpublished, unfinished post. Hopefully will fix in the future.
El Tunco is yet another surf town in Central America, which is renowned internationally for its world class surf break, Puntaroca, but barely any of the tourists attempt to surf it because the locals pretty much take over it when its firing. Other than surfing, there isn’t much to do in El Tunco. One thing I did notice which set it apart from some of the other towns I’d been to as the high number of wealthy El Salvadorians rolling in on some expensive wheels and spending the weekend there to party. The nightlife during the weekend is pretty good, with live performances playing at the dozen bars along the main walk strip and then along the beach, with some variation in music besides Reggaeton or House music.
I stayed at Papaya Lodge. I chose the place simply because it had an internet presence and had good reviews. Chose the $10 dorm rooms there. I tried Pupusas for the first time from one of the comedors close by, and to be honest, it had to be the worst meal I have had since I started by trip. Not only was it expensive, because I wanted one filled with chicken, but there was barely and chicken or cheese, and the Pupusa itself tasted dry and bland.
What did I do
At one point, I thought I should work on my blog, and went to grab my camera and GoPro to upload the photos. I found my camera but when I went looking for my GoPro, I couldn’t find it. I emptied my bag and spread out the contents, but without any success. Swallowing the hard pill in that I had lost my 2nd GoPro, which I had only owned for less than a week…. ouch. I find making blog posts an arduous process so it is more like a chore, and I don’t like doing chores when I’m unhappy, so that’s why I’ve been a bit slow :)
The days started to merge there. I’d wake up, look for breakfast, go for a surf, come back.
I can’t remember (it’s been two months since)
Near El Tunco are 3 surf breaks. The one out to the right is El Zonte, is a nice wave for beginners, but takes at least 5 minutes to paddle out to the ideal takeoff area.
Best pizza.
I had to make a decision on whether to keep travelling with my board or sell it. I decided on selling it as the next time I’ll get to use it is in Panana which by the time I start to head down south, will be about 2000km of travel to do with it. I sold it for $250, and I would say I got around 15 times out on it, so it was just as cheap as hiring a board.
Decided on Gekko Tours.
To be continued…
